As a way of preventing a life threatening peanut allergy, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reversed national health guidelines last month and now recommends that parents introduce foods containing peanut proteins to their infants and children early and often.

To help parents understand the new recommendations for preventing a peanut allergy, Dr. Shahzad Mustafa, MD, Medical Advisory Board Chair of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team (FAACT) and a leading allergist, discusses the guidelines in the following video.

Additional resources and more information available at www.PeanutAllergyFacts.org

Below are the current recommendations for introducing peanut foods to infants:

  • Guideline 1 (severe eczema or egg allergy or both) – introduce age-appropriate peanut foods as early as 4-6 months, after (1) introduction of other solid foods and (2) evaluation with sIgE blood test or skin prick test (SPT) or both. Infants in this category should see their healthcare provider before introducing peanut foods. Depending on the results of the sIgE and/or SPT, peanut foods should be introduced under supervision by a knowledgeable healthcare provider or at home.
  • Guideline 2 (mild to moderate eczema) – introduce peanut foods around 6 months of age, in accordance with family preferences and cultural practices. Age-appropriate peanut foods can be introduced at home without an in-office evaluation by a healthcare provider, unless the infant’s healthcare provider or caregiver prefer in evaluation or supervised feeding or both.
  • Guideline 3 (no eczema or food allergy) – freely introduce age-appropriate peanut containing foods together with other solid foods and in accordance with family preferences and cultural practices.

Introducing peanut foods to infants is easy and can be done by:

  • Feeding the infant 21 pieces of Bamba or similar peanut puff product (either as is or softened with 4-6 tsp of water)
  • Mixing 2 tsp of peanut butter into 2-3 tsp of hot water (allow to cool before feeding)
  • Mixing 2 tsp peanut butter into 2-3 Tbsp previously tolerated pureed fruit or vegetables

  • FAACT Medical Advisory Board Chair
  • Allergist, Division of Allergy & Immunology Rochester Regional Health System, Rochester, NY
  • Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Clerkship Director, Allergy & Clinical Immunology University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Rochester, NY

Not only can cleaning and organizing the home be easy, but according to organizing expert, Donna Smallin Kuper, many unwanted and unused items around the home are worth something and can easily be sold.

Helpful how-tos for shining bright during this season’s mistletoe moments

Looking great during the holidays can go a long way to making the season bright.  About 90 percent* of Americans report feeling some holiday season stress contributing from pressure to look good for the many work and family social gatherings taking place this season.

With fashion and style tips for looking and feeling your best throughout the holiday season, fashion editor and stylist, Joe Zee, has developed the following tips for looking mistletoe ready.

Courtesy of Oral-B, Gillette, Crest and Braun available at Walmart.com

MAKE A STATEMENT: Have some fun and step out of your comfort zone this holiday season. Seek out a statement piece - maybe one you typically wouldn't normally wear - a funky jacket or a big piece of jewelry- and add it to that holiday outfit. This is the fastest way to add pizazz to your look. It’s also an easy way to take a look from day to night which is important during the busy holiday season.

LET IT SHINE: What better time than the holiday season to embrace the sparkle in you. Metallics and shine are a huge trend right now, both for day and night, so why not add some sparkle to your everyday look. Try a sequin trimmed t-shirt with that pencil skirt or add a metallic belt and shoes to that natural look. Don’t forget to dazzle with your smile. For that mistletoe-ready smile check out Crest 3D Professional Effects Whitestrips.

GO BIG OR GO SMALL: There’s a saying that “women shop and men just buy.” But there's no reason that the guys can't also love the part this holiday season. Guys, don’t be afraid to have some fun with your wardrobe this season as well. You can embrace trends by going all out or just have a small nod to it (I like to call this tip-toeing into the trend). If color isn't your thing, why not have a pop of it with your tie or your pocket handkerchief but if you're feeling bold, then the holidays are the perfect time to branch out and try a colored jacket mixed with a solid pant. It's all about the mix and match.

LOOKING THE PART FROM HEAD TO TOE: Being well-groomed is just as important as what you wear during the holidays. Be sure to have a fresh shave before you head out for a night of holiday parties! The Gillette Fusion Proshield Chill with lubrication before and after the blades shields from irritation and ensures you’re ready for your mistletoe moments!

INSIDE AND OUT: Fashion isn’t just about what you wear on the outside, but it's also about how you feel. Take time to pamper yourself before the event, reflect on how you want the holidays to unfold don’t just let them happen.

WRAP-UP: For the tools that make you shine this holiday season visit Walmart.com.

Jennifer Baquet, MA, CCC-SLP, is a senior speech-language pathologist who serves residents at Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York City shares creative approaches to helping those with swallowing disorders with meals and stay hydrated with tasty recipes, like popsicles, soups and other drinks, during the hot summer months.

For the 18 million Americans with dysphagia, a swallowing disorder, every meal and sip of water can feel like drowning. The main risk is aspiration, or inhaling food/liquid into the airway and lungs, which can cause pneumonia. These individuals must rely on thickened liquids, but options are limited and often unappealing. As a result, more than 200,000 short-term hospital stay patients with dysphagia are discharged with a primary diagnosis of dehydration annually.

New study examines the associations of body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (separately and together) with mortality.

Philadelphia, March 07, 2016  -- Keeping body fat low as you age is more important than achieving a low number on the scale, according to an article published in Annals of Internal Medicine. Both low body mass index (BMI), a measure of a person’s weight in relation to height, and high body fat percentage are independently associated with increased risk for death.

Recent studies have shown an association between mild obesity (as measured by BMI) and lower mortality risk. Known as the “obesity paradox,” these findings have been the source of debate, as physicians are advised to counsel obese patients to lose weight to decrease their risk for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Because BMI is an imperfect measure of body fat, researchers hypothesized that greater body fat percentage, independent of BMI, would be associated with increased mortality.
They measured body fat using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and BMI for 50,000 men and women over the age of 40 to examine associations between BMI and percent fat – alone and in combination – with mortality. They found that having a higher percent body fat was independently associated with reduced survival, as was having a low BMI.

These finding suggest that body composition, not just weight, needs to be considered when assessing a patient’s health and risk of death. The authors say that in some people, higher BMI may actually reflect non-fat tissue such as muscle.

When it comes to death risk, how much fat you carry may be more important than the number on the scale. Investigator, Dr. Bill Leslie, explains the results of his research on body fat, body mass index (BMI) and mortality published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Actress Busy Philipps asks cat owners to buy a bag of Purina Cat Chow during the month of July; for every bag purchased, one meal, up to five million meals, will be donated to Rescue Bank, a national non-profit organization

ST. LOUIS  – Each year, millions of cats start their journey to a forever home in an animal welfare organization. One meal can make the difference in helping a shelter cat find its forever home – and during the month of July, every cat person can make a difference in the lives of shelter cats by simply buying a bag of Purina® Cat Chow® brand cat food. Today, Purina Cat Chow announced that during the month of July, its “Nutrition to Build Better Lives” program will work to deliver much-needed cat food to animal welfare organizations so they can continue to focus on helping cats become healthy and ready for adoption.

During its “Nutrition to Build Better Lives” program, for every bag of Purina Cat Chow you purchase for your cat from July 1 through July 31, one meal, up to five million meals, will be donated to Rescue Bank, a non-profit that distributes pet food and other supplies to local shelters and rescue organizations across the country. Now, the simple act of buying a bag of food for your cat can help the cat community-at-large and feed a cat in need that is looking for its forever home.

Actress and cat person Busy Philipps has partnered with Purina Cat Chow “Nutrition to Build Better Lives” program to help encourage cat people nationwide to buy a bag of Purina Cat Chow to ensure that the entire five million meal donation goal is fulfilled.

“With so many cats in shelters and rescues, animal welfare organizations have a lot to worry about, but providing quality nutrition for the cats in their care shouldn’t be one of them,” Philipps said. “It’s important to ensure that shelter cats receive great nutrition, like that of Purina Cat Chow, so that they are healthy and well-fed as they seek their forever homes. As a life-long cat person, this is an effort that is close to my heart.”

Cat people can help Purina Cat Chow reach its goal of donating five million meals to shelter cats across the country by purchasing any size bag of Purina Cat Chow from July 1 through July 31. The amount of Purina Cat Chow purchased during the program will directly affect the amount of meals donated to Rescue Bank.

“At Purina Cat Chow, our single focus is providing great nutrition so that cats live happy and healthy lives,” said Randy Beck, Purina Cat Chow brand director. “We hope cat people across the country will join us in helping to donate food to cats in need. All cats need great nutrition, but it’s especially important for cats in shelters who face greater stress and need extra support as they await their forever homes.”

Since 2013, Purina Cat Chow has supported animal shelters across the country and has donated more than $845,000 in food, supplies and renovations to advance the rescue, nutrition and adoption of cats in shelters.

Rescue Bank is a non-profit organization that operates on a national food bank model to collect and distribute high-quality pet food and other supplies to a network of pre-qualified animal welfare organizations throughout the United States. These organizations are able to use the savings from their food budgets for critical veterinary care to increase the adoption of healthy pets.

“The Purina Cat Chow ‘Nutrition to Build Better Lives’ is a great program for delivering high quality nutrition to rescue and shelter cats,” said Elizabeth Asher, executive director of Rescue Bank. “The potential five million meal donation provides a strong foundation for our animal welfare partners to raise – and adopt out – healthier, happier cats. In addition to the nutritional benefits, Purina’s food donation allows our groups to apply scarce funds to pet wellness and other needs, an added bonus for our partners during the busy summer months.”
